BUYER GUIDE
What Affects Metal Stamping Tooling Cost?
Published by Beizhou Metal · General buyer guide
Stamping tooling is project-specific. A useful quotation explains what the tool includes, how it will be proven, who owns it, and which production assumptions affect the total cost.
Part geometry and tool concept
Part features, material, thickness, tolerances, production route, and expected operation sequence influence tool design. Ask the supplier to state the proposed concept and identify assumptions that need engineering approval.
Design, build, and tryout scope
Separate design, tool construction, tryout, sample parts, revisions, and approval. Clarify what is included in the quoted tool price and how a design change or failed tryout is handled.
Ownership and lifecycle
Document who owns the tool, where it is stored, access and transfer rights, maintenance responsibilities, expected service assumptions, and charges for repair or modification. Keep these terms in the project agreement.
Production scenario
Request separate scenarios for sample/tryout and recurring quantities. Compare the tool investment, piece price, scrap or yield assumptions, inspection, finishing, packaging, and freight on the same basis.
No universal price threshold
Tooling cost cannot be estimated from a part name or a generic per-piece figure. A supplier must review the controlled drawing, material, demand profile, quality plan, and tool ownership terms.
Separate the tool price from the tool agreement
Use two lists. Deliverables may include concept review, build, tryout, sample review and agreed changes. Responsibilities include ownership, storage, maintenance, access, transfer and treatment of a revised drawing. Request explicit inclusions and exclusions for both lists.
Resolve the failed-sample scenario
Ask what happens if a sample misses the agreed acceptance criteria and who authorizes further work. Resolve exclusions before treating the quoted tooling figure as a complete project budget. Do not infer service life, capacity or transfer rights from price alone.
