BUYER GUIDE
Prototype vs. Production CNC Machining: What Changes in the Quote?
Published by Beizhou Metal · General buyer guide
A prototype quote and a repeat-production quote may use different planning assumptions. Ask suppliers to state what changes between the sample and the intended production route, without assuming a universal price or quantity threshold.
Purpose and acceptance
State whether the prototype is for fit, function, appearance, or process validation. Define the same drawing revision, acceptance criteria, critical features, and inspection records expected for both sample and production.
Setup and process planning
Ask which fixtures, toolpaths, setups, or outside processes are included in the prototype quote and whether they will be reused, revised, or replaced for repeat production. Confirm who approves process changes.
Material and finishing
Identify whether prototype material, condition, surface treatment, and inspection are representative of the intended production specification. Document any approved deviation and its impact on evaluation.
Quantity and repeat assumptions
Request separate prices for the sample quantity and each planned order scenario. Include expected annual demand and release pattern as forecasts, and ask how material purchasing, batch size, and packaging affect the quote.
Change control and release
Agree who approves sample results, when the production revision is released, how nonconformances are resolved, and how drawing changes affect cost and schedule. A sample approval is not a production commitment by itself.
Record what the prototype is intended to prove
Before requesting a sample, identify whether the decision concerns fit, appearance, function or the proposed production route. State acceptable material, finish or process deviations. A useful fit-check sample may still leave production-process questions unanswered.
Use a release checklist
Keep the sample revision, approved deviations, inspection findings and unresolved actions together. Before repeat production, ask which assumptions remain valid and what has changed. Do not silently carry a temporary prototype deviation into an order.
A proposed instrument housing
For an instrument-housing prototype, separate the fit check from any later requirements for finish, marking, repeat inspection or packaging. Identify which questions the sample actually answers. This is a planning scenario, not a customer case or a claim of verified product performance.
