BUYER GUIDE

How to Prepare a Sheet Metal Bracket for Bending

Published by · General buyer guide

A bracket drawing should communicate function and acceptance requirements clearly. Bend feasibility depends on material, thickness, tooling, geometry, and the selected supplier’s process; do not assume a universal minimum radius or hole-to-bend distance.

Start with the functional interfaces

Identify mounting surfaces, mating parts, fasteners, load direction, clearance zones, and dimensions that control assembly. Separate critical dimensions from reference dimensions and define datums that match how the bracket is located.

Specify material and thickness

Name the exact material grade, thickness, condition, and finish. If substitutions are acceptable, define who approves them and what evidence is required. Material choice can affect bend behavior and appearance.

Show bend intent

Make bend lines, direction, angles, inside radius where required, and formed dimensions clear. Include a 3D model and a flat pattern when available, and state which document controls. Ask the supplier to review the proposed geometry and tooling assumptions.

Review holes and edge features

Dimension holes and slots from functional datums. Flag features near bends, cut edges, or formed regions for review rather than relying on an assumed shop rule. Identify burr direction, deburring, and edge-break requirements.

Define inspection and finish

State how critical formed dimensions should be checked, whether the inspection condition is formed or flat, and the expected finish after forming. Specify coating coverage and appearance only where needed.

Before release

Request a supplier manufacturability review and agree how flat-pattern changes, springback compensation, sample approval, and drawing revisions will be controlled. Confirm all numeric process limits with the actual manufacturing partner.

Who controls the flat pattern?

Agree whether the released part is defined by the formed drawing, the flat pattern, or both. Identify the controlling revision and resolve inconsistencies before cutting. Link a supplier-generated flat pattern to the released formed geometry and review any change.

CAD rules are inputs, not a shop capability

Sheet-metal CAD rules include thickness, bend radius and an unfolding method. A software default does not demonstrate that a particular supplier will produce the requested formed dimensions. Ask the selected supplier to confirm the assumptions for the actual material and process.

An automation mounting-bracket review

For a proposed automation mounting bracket, identify the mounting face, mating-hole pattern, clearance envelope and assembly orientation. Ask which dimensions will be inspected after forming and whether the finish affects assembly clearance. This is a planning example, not a Beizhou customer project or a load-rated design.
