BUYER GUIDE
What Should a Sheet Metal Fabrication Quotation Include?
Published by Beizhou Metal · General buyer guide
A complete quotation makes scope and assumptions visible. Ask each bidder to price the same revision, material, quantities, finish, acceptance criteria, and delivery terms so the comparison is meaningful.
Part definition
List drawing and model revisions, material grade and thickness, flat pattern, formed geometry, critical dimensions, and any assembly drawings. Record open technical questions separately from the quote.
Process scope
Ask the supplier to identify included operations such as cutting, forming, deburring, joining, and finishing. Clarify any subcontracted process and who remains responsible for conformity and records.
Commercial breakdown
Request tooling or setup charges, unit pricing at stated quantities, minimum-order assumptions, sample charges, price validity, payment terms, and any volume or material assumptions. Ask how changes affect price.
Quality evidence
State required inspection points, measurement records, material documents, first-article expectations, traceability, and nonconformance response. Confirm whether these are included or priced separately.
Finish and delivery
Specify coating or surface treatment, color and appearance criteria where applicable, packaging and protection, destination, lead-time assumptions, freight, and delivery terms. Keep quoted production timing distinct from an unverified website estimate.
Compare like for like
Use a written comparison table for included scope, exclusions, evidence, risk, and landed cost. Ask the bidder to list assumptions instead of treating silence as acceptance.
A practical buyer worksheet
| Item | Ask each bidder to state | Resolve before comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Grade, specification, thickness and condition | Are proposed substitutions identified and approved? |
| Process | Cutting, bending, deburring, joining and finish included | Which operations or outside processes are excluded? |
| One-off charges | Setup, samples and tooling quoted separately | Who owns tooling and pays for changes or maintenance? |
| Acceptance | Drawing revision, critical features and included inspection records | Are all bids based on the same acceptance criteria? |
| Delivery scope | Quantity, packaging, destination, freight scope and timing assumptions | Are taxes, freight or other charges excluded? |
| Open questions | Assumptions, deviations and quote validity | Treat an unanswered requirement as unresolved, not included. |
This is a scope checklist, not a supplier capability or engineering approval. Discuss sheet metal fabrication, or contact us with a non-confidential outline.
Review note: This buyer guide is a general planning aid. Confirm project-specific engineering, supplier capabilities, commercial terms, and legal requirements before relying on them.
