BUYER GUIDE
CNC Machining vs. Sheet Metal Fabrication: Which Fits the Part?
Published by Beizhou Metal · General buyer guide
CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication start from different part forms and process routes. Compare them using the same functional requirements, material specification, quantity, and acceptance plan.
Consider CNC machining
Discuss CNC when the design is a solid component with geometry and features suited to material removal. The supplier should review the stock form, setups, material use, secondary operations, and inspection plan.
Consider sheet metal fabrication
Discuss sheet metal processes when the design is made from sheet or plate and may require cutting, bending, joining, or finishing. The supplier must confirm how the specified material, geometry, and interfaces affect the route.
Compare function and total scope
Check stiffness, load paths, interfaces, appearance, corrosion environment, assembly, and any finish requirements. Compare material, cutting or machining, forming, joining, tooling or setup, inspection, packaging, and freight.
Use a drawing-led review
Send the same controlled 2D drawing, 3D model, material, quantity scenarios, and acceptance criteria to each bidder. Ask for alternatives and assumptions in writing; no route is assumed to be cheaper or more suitable without review.
Separate a manufacturing quote from a redesign proposal
First ask whether both routes can satisfy the released design. If an alternative changes wall form, joints, mounting faces or assembly, record it as a separate design proposal for approval. Do not compare a machined part and a redesigned sheet assembly as if they were the same drawing with only a different process name.
A hypothetical cover and mounting interface
For a proposed cover, identify the enclosure envelope, mounting faces, openings, appearance and inspection requirements. Ask which route would preserve those interfaces and which would require changes. A plate-like appearance alone does not establish whether machining, cutting and bending, or a combination is suitable. This is a discussion example, not a Beizhou customer case or a validated enclosure design.
Record the assumptions behind each option
For each supplier-confirmed feasible route, record material and stock form, one-off preparation, recurring operations, joining or finishing, inspection evidence and change responsibility. Compare the same accepted quantity, destination and delivery scope. Keep unresolved design assumptions visible instead of treating an omitted operation as a cost saving.
