CNC Milling vs. Turning: How Do I Choose?

Published by · General buyer guide

Milling and turning are both subtractive machining processes, but the part geometry and required features influence which route is appropriate. A drawing-led supplier review is needed before confirming a process.

When milling is worth discussing

Milling is commonly considered for prismatic or multi-face parts, pockets, slots, and features whose location depends on workholding and tool access. The actual machine setup and achievable geometry depend on the selected equipment and supplier.

When turning is worth discussing

Turning is commonly considered for rotational parts such as shafts, bushings, and cylindrical features. Cross holes, flats, slots, or non-round features may require additional operations or a different machine route.

Questions that change the route

Ask how the part will be located, which surfaces are finished in each setup, how concentric or positional requirements are inspected, and whether secondary operations are included. Include the mating interfaces and critical features in the RFQ.

What to provide

Share the 3D model, controlled 2D drawing, exact material, quantity, finish, inspection requirements, and any assembly context. The supplier should identify assumptions and confirm the proposed route for the actual geometry.

Describe features before naming the machine

List rotational surfaces, pockets, flats, slots, holes and mating interfaces. Ask the supplier to map the features to proposed operations and explain where the part must be held or relocated. Do not infer the entire route from the external shape alone.

A spacer with a side slot

For a proposed cylindrical spacer with a side slot, discuss both the rotational features and the slot. Ask whether the quote includes secondary work and its inspection. This is a hypothetical planning example; it does not prescribe a machine type or verify any supplier equipment.

Three questions for the route review

Which feature establishes the locating reference? Which operation could affect an already finished interface? What inspection evidence will show the relationship between the features? Record the answers with the drawing revision and quote assumptions.
