How Do Tolerance Requirements Affect CNC Machining Cost?

Published by · General buyer guide

Tolerances communicate acceptable variation. Tighter or more complex requirements may change process planning and verification, but cost effects depend on the part, material, geometry, quantity, and supplier route.

Tie each tolerance to function

Identify fit, motion, sealing, alignment, or interchangeability needs. Apply tighter controls only to features that need them, and avoid adding a blanket tight tolerance without a functional reason.

Make drawing intent measurable

Use clear dimensions, datums, geometric controls where needed, units, and a stated drawing standard and edition. Resolve ambiguity between the model, drawing, notes, and inspection method before requesting a firm quotation.

Ask how requirements will be verified

For critical features, state the acceptance method, inspection condition, required report, sampling expectation, and any customer approval. Ask whether the chosen measurement approach can access the feature and preserve traceability.

Compare quote assumptions

Ask suppliers to identify special setups, additional inspection, process capability evidence, or outside measurement that is included or excluded. Compare prices only when the tolerance interpretation and inspection scope match.

Avoid universal claims

No single tolerance range predicts cost across every material and geometry. Confirm achievable limits for the actual drawing with the manufacturing and inspection teams before release.

Make a feature-to-evidence list

For each critical feature, list its assembly function, controlling drawing reference, datum relationship, acceptance requirement and proposed inspection evidence. Ask the supplier to mark unresolved interpretation or access questions before the quote is finalized. This list organizes a technical review; it does not define a new tolerance or replace the drawing standard.

A proposed mounting-interface review

For a proposed mounting plate, distinguish the locating interface from clearance features and appearance surfaces. Ask which relationships affect assembly and how they will be checked. This is a hypothetical discussion scenario; the designer and selected manufacturing partner must establish the actual requirements.

Ask for the cost consequence, not a blanket multiplier

Have each bidder identify any changed setup, finishing, inspection or outside measurement scope associated with the specified requirements. A tolerance label alone does not establish an achievable process capability or a fixed price increase. Compare the same interpretation and evidence scope.
